Tebow Super Bowl Ad – What is the Big Deal?

The most highly anticipated Super Bowl ad prior to the big game was the Focus on the Family clip that included Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow and his mom.  For weeks, all the talk has been that this is a Pro-Life ad and that CBS is negligent in allowing the ad to run.  Now that the ad has run, I really don’t see the problem.  My wife and I looked at each other last night and almost in unison said, “What’s the big deal?”  You can judge for yourself.

Planned Parenthood decided to create their own ad with a couple of athletes.  I have no idea if they actually saw the ad (Tebow ad) before it aired, but their ad seems a little out of sorts, in my opinion, but everyone has the opportunity to create their own ad and post it on Youtube.

If Planned Parenthood really wanted to diminish the value of the ad they would have just let it run.  By focusing attention on the ad they guaranteed that millions would be sure to watch it, just to see what all the hubbub was about.  I would say that Focus on the Family really got their money’s worth in advance publicity and continued exposure of the ad on Youtube with over 120,000 hits since yesterday.  Gloria Allred will also push the ad to epic status.  I’m not sure that was what she was going for, but it’s all publicity for her.

An article from Elizabeth Hovde in the opinion page of the The Oregonian newspaper ran last week outlining the “controversy.”  Here is a snippet:

The idea that a mom of a famous athlete is going to be in an ad praising her choice to carry her child to full term has wrongly infuriated some people, including Gloria Allred. The pro-choice heroine and lawyer is busy trying to paint Pam Tebow a liar, saying because the Philippines outlaws abortion, she finds it hard to believe that doctors would recommend the procedure. (Never mind that Pam Tebow was an American who knew that in her home country abortions were routine procedures in 1987. And never mind that plenty of women had abortions in America long before they became legal. Has Allred forgotten her own arguments for and our own nation’s history with abortion? Abortions can be obtained, regardless of the law.)

Allred is threatening to file a complaint with the FTC and the FCC if the ad airs without disclosing that abortions were illegal in the Philippines at the time Pam Tebow made her choice. She is making a huge mistake attacking a woman for making statements that Allred can’t possibly disprove. And she’s revealing herself to be anti-choice in deciding that Pam Tebow’s choice isn’t worth hearing.

I for one am all for ads just like this one that are tastefully done.  No where in the ad was there some call to action or chiding others for having abortions.  CBS has discretion to accept or reject whatever ad they choose.  They are a somewhat left leaning network in their news division but the marketing people obviously know the makeup of the country and decided to let this ad run.  By rejecting an ad from a gay dating site they also revealed that they knew this would cause problems.  I’d say they made a smart business decision but we’ll see when the ratings come in.

Of course, this is just my opinion.

Lieberman: Denied By Stuart Smalley

Does it seem strange that this Health Care monstrosity is being pushed to some artificial deadline (Christmas) for no good reason?  I’m not one for doing things because “that’s the way it has always been done,” but it does seem curious that Al Franken denied an extra minute of time to former Democrat (and current Independent) Joe Lieberman on the floor of the Senate.

I really don’t care about the procedural crap that goes on in Congress and every other political body in the United States.  I think we are way too formal with our government and need to speak in common language that more than just the lawyers in DC can understand.  So…the question is…why is the procedure being changed in this instance if it has not been that way, in recent history?  Why the rush?

Earlier in the week, while debating defense spending, Senator Tom Coburn demanded a reading of a spending resolution from Senator Bernie Sanders.  My illustrious Senator, Dick Durbin, stated “How in the world can we in good conscience do this at this time of year?”  How can we in good conscience not bring relevent issues to the floor?  If these yahoos read the bills, amendments and resolutions aloud in the chamber for all to hear, they might make better decisions rather than rush to judgement and vote for items they have not properly read and vetted.  Why is this so hard to fathom?

Senator Menendez added:

“It’s become very clear to me, as it should be clear to just about everyone, that everything they’re doing has nothing to do, nothing to do, with helping Americans get affordable healthcare or get jobs, but everything to do, everything to do, with winning the next election,” Menendez said. “The Republicans have decided their road to electoral victory in 2010 and to poise themselves 2012 is for this president and this Congress to fail.”

Health Care?  I thought they were voting on defense spending?  Just trying to get things straight.  As far as having Congress fail, I for one am of the opinion that the less that Congress does, the better.  The only seem to screw up things that are put into their hands.

Maybe the rub is just with Republican and Independent politicians.  Maybe Al Franken is so inexperienced that he needs a lesson on procedure.  Maybe the party in power wants to stifle debate on this vastly important issue (Health Care).  Who really knows.  It is interesting, though.

Back to the Health Care monstrosity, I hope the bill is read aloud for all to hear like was threatened before Thanksgiving.  We’ll see if they (Congress) have the chutzpah to actually do that.  I won’t hold my breath.

Of course, this is just my opinion.

Axelrod Blitzed on Health Care Competition

Wolf Blitzer swerved into the truth about breaking down barriers to the insurance companies to complete across state lines.  Interesting stuff.

As Axelrod said, this is not endemic to the kind of reforms that we’re proposing….

Kennedy Family Throws Grandson to the Wolves

Nice.  They just couldn’t have a nice funeral service for Teddy, they had to make it political.  What a disgrace and a shame.

What’s next?  The mentally handicapped?  The invalid?  The homeless? The downtrodden?   The huddled masses?  Where does the shame begin for the left?

Do it for Teddy?  I don’t think so.

Of course, this is just my opinion.

Cinco De Quatro?

Those of you who might have slept through Spanish class in High School that is translated as the “Fifth of Four” or something close to that.   Now, I feel compelled to bring up this sort of gaff as it was done ad nauseum over the last eight years in the Bush White House.  The video below shows this gaff (you only have to watch the first 30 seconds or so unless you really like torturing yourself).

Juxtapose this statement with the one below:

I think you should take your own advise Mr. President.  Take a couple classes in Spanish or brush up on your Spanish alphabet.  Or maybe, fire your teleprompter.

Of course, this is just my opinion.

Arlen Specter Comes Out of the Closet

arlenspectorNo he’s not carrying the rainbow flag in the parade, but Arlen Specter did switch sides on Tuesday.  He confirmed what most conservatives have known for some time that he is really a lukewarm polititian (or maverick as it is known in the political world).  The bible has a great passage in Revelations regarding being lukewarm:

So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.

Revelation 3:16 (New International Version)

My first thought was, it’s about time!  Senator Specter has been on the liberal end of many important issues for some time and this just confirms everything.

He stated that he Republican Party left him and went too far to the right.  Really?  I think that is what the Republican party is all about – conservative values, less government, more control to the people instead of the government.

The real truth is that he knew he would not be elected as a Republican in Pennsylvania and is thinking only of himself with this switch.  I seriously doubt that he will be elected as a Democrat.  Why would a democratic voter hire a former Republican that switched sides because he knew he would not be reelected as a Republican.  I suppose those same people voted for Obama, so maybe I’m giving them too much credit, but this may be the best thing that could have happened for the long term.

Voting Record

Money For Hamas?

Hillary Clinton in Gaza

Hillary Clinton

In this time of an advanced spending agenda by the Obama administration, it seems that we’ve exported the spendulus mentality.   Our esteemed Sec. of State has announced a pledge of 900 million to Hamas, er. sorry, Palestine.  The funds are meant to rebuild the Gaza area that has been bombed in recent skirmishes.

I guess my first question is… what?????  Don’t we have some kind of crises at home?

I know, some of you are yelling at the screen, “How about all those people injured in the fighting living in bombed out homes.”  Well, I truly feel sorry for the victims.  Really, I do.  I also feel sorry for the Israelis who have also died and endured repeated bombings by Hamas.  It’s a two way street in that fight from what I see.  My beef is that I don’t want to pay for rebuilding anything in that region – on either side.  (That includes Iraq)   Can’t they take responsibility for their own problems and rebuild it themselves?  Just a thought.

$900 million is a lot of money.  Is it money well spent?  I guess you can be the judge.

Of course, this is just my opinion.
